Seasonal and Harvest WorkersThe German Federal Ministry of Interior has decided to no longer allow seasonal workers and harvest workers to enter Germany due to the existing border controls as of Thursday, 5 pm.

The decision has been taken by the Federal Minister of the Interior Horst Seehofer in collaboration with the Federal Cabinet as a part of the rest of border restriction measures, in a bid of the country to further curb the spread of the Coronavirus.

The rule applies to entries from third countries, Great Britain and EU countries that do not fully apply the Schengen acquis (including Bulgaria and Romania) and to countries for which internal border controls have been temporarily reintroduced,” the statement reads, adding that the regulation will apply until further notice.

The Ministry asserts that the additional entry restrictions were necessary in order to reduce the risk of infection in cross-border traffic.

Only last week, the Ministry decided to no longer permit air and boat trips from Italy, Spain, Austria, France, Luxembourg, Denmark and Switzerland to enter Germany except for essential purposes.

The decision was also taken by Minister Seehofer, who also asked German citizens to avoid trips if they aren’t absolutely necessary.

Europe is considered as an epicentre of the pandemic, the World Health Organization has announced, and no longer only an infected area. Due to the situation, the block had previously decided to impose a common EU travel ban at its external borders, banning from entering every non-EU/EEA citizen and passport holder.

Aside from Germany, most of the Schengen members have introduced full internal border checks, in a bid to keep the situation under control.

Germany is currently the fifth country in the world with the highest number of infected persons, which is 40,421. However, it is listed as the 9th country among those with the highest number of deaths, or 229.
