With an astonishing architecture, a rich history and a mesmerizing nature, no doubt Germany remains one of the top favorite spots in Europe for tourists. In addition, with over 7 million foreign residents, and endless opportunities for business doing the number of those wishing to visit the country for family visits and business, is increasing yearly.

Germany remains one of the leading European countries when it comes to the number of Schengen visa applications received, recent data shows. In 2018 alone, the German embassies abroad received 2,056,296 Schengen visa applications, or about 13% of the total number of Schengen visa applications received by the 26 member countries.

A number of 1,838,775 applications for a German Schengen Visa received a positive answer, whereas 9.1% were turned down. In addition, a total of 30,822 visas with Limited Territorial Validity were issued by the German consulates, while the share of multiple entry visas in 2018 was 84.6%.

In fact, the number of Schengen visa applications lodged at the German consulates across the globe marked a slight increase of only 0.35% compared to the previous year.

Yet, the rejection rate increased from 7.6% in 2017 to 9.1% in 2018. The number of rejected German Schengen Visa applications has been gradually increasing through the years. In 2014 the rejection rate was 5.7%, 5.6% in 2015, and 6.1% in 2016.

Once again, the consulates in Moscow and in Shanghai were the busiest German consulates in 2018. The Consulate in Moscow, Russian Federation received 199,626 short-term visa applications for Germany. Whereas, the Consulate in Shanghai received another 172,584 applications.

The German consulates listed below, follow as the busiest in 2018:

  • Beijing, China – with 140,216 applications received
  • Istanbul, Turkey – with 125,702 applications received
  • Guangzhou (Canton), – with China 84,037 applications received
  • Ankara, Turkey – with 72,277 applications received
  • Bangkok, Thailand – with 58,363 applications received
  • Mumbai, India – with 57,900 applications received
